GFT began as doctoral research. It remains a research program: continuously validated against K-12 classroom practice, and continuously refined against what school communities actually need to defend the claims they make about their graduates.
Origins at Columbia.
Dr. Michael S. Gayle's doctoral research at Columbia University asked why so many “Portrait of a Graduate” frameworks — however beautifully written — failed to translate into anything a teacher could actually rate or a school could actually defend. The answer became the seed of GFT: a shared, weighted, six-domain model with a common rating scale across grade bands.
A K-12 validation program.
GFT has been iterated against practice in early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school classrooms across multiple partner schools. Validation is ongoing; findings are folded back into rubric revisions and the certification requirements at each level.

This is the through line. Every dashboard, every credential, and every institutional partnership on this platform exists to close the gap between what a school says its graduates should be and what it can show they actually are.
